~Final Assessment~

At the beginning of the year, my main goal was to just narrow possible job choices for myself. I came into this class unsure of what I really wanted to do in the future. Although, that choice is hard to finalize at the moment I think with the Career Cruising assignment, it made things much simpler. It helped to narrow down the requirements and things I needed to keep track of, including grades and finances. I think in the beginning of the semester and even towards the middle, I didn't really participate in commenting on other peoples' work to help them. With the health projects that we did, it definitely gave me an opportunity to comment on other projects. I feel as a group (Kiran, Danilyn and I) we came up with a bunch of questions that helped other groups. One thing that I feel I did well on was putting in actual effort. At the beginning I really wanted the reassurance of having job options narrowed so I won't be completely freaking out by the time grade 12 comes around. I was also looking forward to making a resume so I could get a job and not really do it all by myself. It was helpful to have other comment suggestions on what I could add or remove. Another thing that I found useful were the quizzes that we took earlier this semester to give us a better idea of what we were capable of doing and how our personalities matched up with multiple jobs. It really helped to narrow down a huge range of opportunities especially in the medical field.

Process: Nutrition log- I think just remembering to actually take pictures when I was about to eat was a challenge. I chose this piece for 'process' just because it was a process to gather all my pictures and making sure that I remember to take pictures of all the stuff I did eat. One thing I did learn from the nutrition unit + the nutrition blog is just that I could pay more attention to labels. I could also benefit by using skim milk instead of 1%. If I were to do this assignment again, I don't think I would change anything just because my views on nutrition have been pretty consistent throughout the year. I try to keep my consumption balanced between healthy and somewhat unhealthy foods.
Improvement: health projects- I commented on other peoples' projects in order to help them (adding to the learning environment) The reason I chose this aspect was because towards the beginning of the semester and even towards the middle, I didn't comment a lot on other peoples' stuff. This unit allowed me to actually assist others with their work. Also, other peoples' comments were sometimes helpful when adding to our presentation. If I were to do the entire semester over, I think I would just be more consistent with commenting on other peoples' stuff. Commenting on the health presentations allowed me to think critically and help enhance the learning environment of this class.
Perseverance: Cover letter (near the bottom) - Only because I really was not sure as to which job I wanted to apply to. It was hard to be specific with how my skills match up with the job description when I didn't know where I wanted to apply. If I were to do this assignment again I think I would just have a set place that I would apply at. While doing this I had to be quite vague to capture all the aspects of retail and how I can add to it. This also showed me how organized I would need to be when applying for a job. I would need to base my cover letter on the skills that the job description shows and how they relate to me. If I were to re-do this assignment, I would get more people to take a look at my writing to see if I made any mistakes grammatically.
Risk Taking: planning field trip- I don't normally venture out to try new things that often but I did volunteer and participate for a bunch of the activities that we did. I guess the reason I chose the field trip for 'risk taking' was to showcase that I was actually eager and interested in what was going on at that trip. Even if I'm not necessarily planning on going into that spectrum of jobs, it was a great way to be exposed in case I do change my mind later on. What I took away from this is that an experience can be much more enjoyable if I put myself in a more outgoing mindset.
Favourite: Resume (near the bottom) - It was one of the things I was most looking forward to in this class. I want to get a summer job so this will definitely be used in the future. I can take this starting draft and add to it in the future instead of starting from scratch. With resumes in general, I feel like you need to really be sure of your skills and how you can help enhance the place your applying to.
Something of Personal Significance: YPI- Even though our group didn't win, it was still nice to visit the SOS Children's village BC and see how lucky we truly are. It was a good way for us to acknowledge the different social issues that are in not just our community but all around the world. It was great for us to actually go to the village that's set up locally and to see how it impacts so many lives. Also, talking to Kistie, the education coordinator and village manager, really inspires you to venture out and make a difference even in the smallest way. Through this opportunity, I learned that there are so many social issues that need to be addressed.
Burn It: nutrition log- I don't like documenting what I eat. It was difficult to remember to take pictures right before I was about to eat. From this assignment, I realized I should be more careful with what I put into my body. Also, just easy substitutions can help with my health (pop-water, 2% milk- skim, white bread-brown bread, etc).

Throughout this class, I've been attending on time and been pretty consistent with self-regulating my learning.  I've finished my assignments on time and most of them in class. I think in the final assessment I should get a G. I've put a lot of thought into most of my assignments since I know they can help me out in the future. Overall, I think I should get an A (88-92%)

Nutrition Blog

Do you have any health goals related to nutrition? lose/gain/maintain weight? modifications to nutrition? Or do you even care?
I don't really care enough to plan out my meals and know the nutritional values for everything that goes into my body. Although, I don't just put garbage into my body either. I like to keep it quite balanced if I do eat too much junk food but normally the healthier foods have a higher ratio. For dairy products, I use 1% milk for my cereal.

How do you realistically plan to achieve these goals? Use your two day nutrition log to serve as evidence
I don't really have a plan as every time I do try to plan out my meals, it normally doesn't last. I just try to substitute ingredients that are healthier.

Do you have any limitations preventing you from eating as healthy as you want to?
The only limitation would be not having the ingredients to make a healthier option. Other than that I think I just get lazy when making a healthier meal.

Is there anything you can take away from our class nutrition discussions, Q and A's and nutrition logs?
I guess the amount of sugar in the stuff we get from fast food restaurants is surprising. Another thing would just be that I really don't like documenting my food.

Portfolio Assessment

At the beginning of the semester, I aimed to get a better idea of what I wanted to do as a career. I wanted to know which university was the best pick for me and which university offers the programs that I need to succeed. After looking at a bunch of personality tests and career tests, I definitely know that I want to go into the medical field. My choices of what exactly I want to do has been narrowed down so it's much easier to search for the requirements. I have looked up the requirements for the careers that can be a possibility for me. This showed me that I would need at least eight years of post-secondary schooling.

I think in this class I have achieved a G. I've finished my assignments on time. Also, I have put in a lot of thought into my assignments since I know that these projects can aid me in the future. I have learned to use my time for efficiently. Although, sometimes I could improve on staying focused. I can also improve by commenting more on my classmates' posts.

With the variety of quizzes that we took, it gave me a better understanding of what I'm capable of. It showed me the compatibility between a career and my personality. In our 'Golden Future' assignment, it was nice to write everything down just in case I changed my mind in the future. It could show the development as well as making things easier to plan for the near future. When we were being the dean of a university/college, it gave more insight to the possibilities that are available to us. I think it was a clear representation of how curious we are as to what we can do for our future. After choosing the University of Irvine, it gave me a some what clear view of how much everything would cost. Since most universities are kind of similar, it gave an insight of the costs of other universities. It also helped me to know whether or not I wanted to stay close to home. Knowing that living situations can alter the price range, it could definitely change my choice of post-secondary schooling.

I think I've been pretty good at self-regulation myself in class. I've attended class on time. I could improve by going around to see if anyone needs any help. Usually, when I ask the people around me, they already know what they're doing. Although, I've finished my assignments to the best of my ability. 87%
I've used power points to show a bunch of my assignments with a partner or two. I'm not a big fan of prezi so I'd rather do a power point. My blog posts meet the criteria of the assignments and are available for everyone to read.  89%
I could definitely improve by contributing more to the learning environment. I need to spend more time and effort to comment on peoples' blogs. I've been pretty good in terms of sharing my ideas in small groups whenever we get the chance to. I've finished my assignments on time so they are available for the class to see and reflect on. 86%
Since I am interested to learn more about my future and the possibilities that are available, I've been paying attention into researching the different careers that I can go into. I am eager to learn about the many opportunities that can be available for me after high school. When we were doing the career cruising assignment, I got a better idea of the pre-requisites I would need to go into the medical field. Most of the requirements are the same for a variety of possible jobs in the medical field. 91%

 Overall, I think I deserve an A between 87-91%.

Employability Skills

Part one
My employability skills:
  Communication:
  • I can listen to instructions, if needed
  • I can communicate in a professional manner when speaking to customers or even a colleague
Problem-Solving:
  • I can think quickly on my feet and come up with a solution for a possible solution
  • I tend to do better whilst I'm under pressure so that can help with any problems that I may encounter
Team Work:
  • I can co-operate with a group full of several people
  • I'm willing to compromise to make things run smoothly
  • I know when to step up and show leadership but can also follow instructions given by someone else
Personal Responsibility:
  • I can separate my personal life with my professional life
  • I am organized
  • I can remain professional while I'm working
  • I can use my time wisely and efficiently
Part two
After taking the quiz, it is clear that I respond well to information that is presented in multiple ways. I can take information from multiple topics to further explain or understand something. The quiz shows that I can work well within a group. I can adapt to the opinions of others in group. My ability to plan and pay attention to detail can come in handy if I were to get a job that can allow me to use those skills. I show interest and put in effort into anything that I;m doing. I set personal goals for my self to ensure that I grow as a person and develop my strengths and weaknesses.

I could improve by using a more variety of mediums to show my understanding or even for explaining. I can also improve in being more confident, that way I can radiate confidence in my work to show that I can handle whatever is thrown at me. I could also improve my ability to cope with uncertainty.

If I were to be hired for a job, I bring the ability to work with a bunch of people. I can adapt to any situation and can think on my feet. I'm organized so that ensures that I probably won't lose anything important. I can compromise to have a positive outcome. I pay attention to detail and can explain effectively if I have an issue or concern.

Interim Report

I think so far in the semester, I've been pretty good with self-regulating my learning. I've been attending class on time. I do my best to finish all the assignments in class to the best of my ability. I'm able to get to work without having the teacher to instruct by looking at the assignments page on the website. I'm willing to help others if they need help but I haven't gone around the class seeing if anyone would need any assistance. I could improve by spending free time more efficiently. If I finish early, I could help others that are not done or comment on a latest post by someone in the class. I think I have an overall positive outlook on this class since I am eager to learn more about career choices and other stuff that this class offers. I think I should get a G in this course so far.

Career Cruising

My short term and long term goals education wise is just maintaining my good grades. I want to be able to go to a good university where I can be able to further develop my brain. Plus, to get into a good university, I need good grades. Especially since I want to go into the medical field, I need at least a 92% average. Career wise, I want to have a job during the summer so I can save money for post secondary schooling. I still would want to have a part time job during the weekends.
For the area that I would want to base my career off of, I need all the main sciences that are offered in high school. I would take chemistry and physics in both grade 11 and 12. I would take biology 12 as well just so I can learn more.
My top five career choices are: Psychiatrist, Radiologist, Oncologist, Neurologist, and           Pediatrician.
For all those careers I would need: chemistry, physics, math, english, socials, and biology for sure. I would prefer to be able to stay close to home, hopefully in the same province. Hopefully, I could get into UBC or even UVIC. Both universities offer courses that I would need. To buff up my record, I could volunteer in places where I am helping others to get accustomed to the jobs that I want. To get to the career that I want, I need to continue to get good grades, save money for post-secondary school, get a job, and hopefully gain more work experience. The thing with wanting a job in the medical field is that it can get quite challenging at times. I would need to make quick decisions since it could be a matter of life or death for someone. Another thing is that I need to be more emotionally mature and stable. Working as an oncologist especially.
For these careers, I would need 2-3 years to get a bachelor's degree, 4 years for an undergraduate degree, 4 years at medical school plus an additional 5 years of residency training (roughly, depending on the career). Also, for some of the careers you would have to obtain a licence from the province you'll be working in. Usually, it takes about 15 years of schooling. Additionally, you would have to take the MCAT ( medical college admissions test). After the residency, you would have to pass the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). To achieve my goal, I would need to remain calm and hardworking plus I should never give up since it is such a long process for all the careers that I want to get into.
